"Expect nothing. Live frugally on surprise."
~ Alice Walker
How does this sit with you?
Do you welcome this thought? Reject it? Something else?
Perhaps if we lived open to what comes, without expectations, we would live richly on surprise.
Perhaps if we were frugal with expectations, we would be wonder-fully in the moment, somewhat like young children who are so often delighted.
Did you know that: "The average three-year-old laughs 300 times a day. The average 40-year-old? Only four." This
is what Margaret Gerloff reports in a Psychology Today article.
But we are so used to expecting things, aren't we? This is not necessarily to say with an attitude of entitlement. Just with expectations. We may even sometimes expect "the worst." Unfortunately, some habitually expect "bad" things to happen.
For greater well-being we are advised by many
to expect good things, miracles, success, prosperity, health, blessings, etc.
Might there be a way to hold a attitude of hope, trusting that life is good, with a readiness for blessings, and have no specific expectations at the same time?
Today, let's experiment with this. To the extent that you can, let go of expectations. Be open to life's surprises. Be ready to be delighted.
With gratitude and
joy,
Charlene
