“We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.”
~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
As I prepare for
Today's Touchstone, I find myself appreciating a number of quotes from theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
This featured one suggests - no, it implores - that we shift the way that we see one another.
Instead of judging what others do and what they fail to do, we focus on how others are suffering.
The reality is: everyone is suffering in some way. Even in the best of times, we all have our challenges, our hurts, our questions, our struggles, our grievings. That is human life.
Imagine if
we had been conditioned from early childhood to use our natural empathy and compassion. Imagine if everyday we set out to care deeply for one another instead of looking for reasons to judge, fear, and hate others.
If we could walk in one another's shoes, we would weep.
Let's aim to cease our judgings, soften our fears, and disarm our hostilities.
And practice compassion.
With love,
Charlene
