"It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees."
~ Wangari Maathai
The little things that we do in the outer
world add up to significant strengths and solutions in our communities, our countries, our world.
As a touchstone for today's message, I offer this quote too:
"Every one of us has to choose confronting a big fire. Every one of us has a teaspoon. Fill it with water and throw it in the fire. The teaspoon is very small and the fire is very large, but there are many of us and every one of us has a teaspoon. I do what I can do as a teacher, as a writer, as a neighbor,
as a citizen to pour some water on the flames of hatred, and incitement, and fanaticism, and bigotry, and prejudice. I have words and I use words. Words are my teaspoon. This is what I can do. What can you do?
~ Amos Oz
What issue are you most concerned about?
What if we each focused on one issue and we each contributed our seemingly little thing - our teaspoon of water -
toward extinguishing the fire, toward healing the hurt, toward solving the problem, transforming it?
Little things do make a difference. Let's not feel small nor powerless. Instead of just complaining, let's do something. We each have a teaspoon. My teaspoon is words too. What is yours? What can you do? The possibilities are limitless. What will you do?
"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for
your country."
~ John Fitzgerald Kennedy
