“You occasionally see one, and it’s the thrill of a lifetime. ~ Velma “Wild Horse Annie” Johnston
Have you ever seen a herd of wild horses thunder across an open desert?
It certainly was a thrill I'll never forget.
It happened almost 20 years ago. Frank and I lived in Phoenix. Our home was at the edge of where city growth meets raw desert land.
We were taking a Jeep drive, as we did occasionally, on one of the rough primitive roads that cross that beautiful expanse of natural land.
At first all we saw was a cloud of dust in the distance. At some point we felt the vibrations of thundering hooves. As the cloud neared, the horses appeared. We could see the magnificent creatures running single file in a line parallel to our moving car. Suddenly the first horse turned and the whole herd followed, passing in front of our car.
As I reminisce, I again feel the speechless awe - some of it - and the thrill and reverence that Frank and I experienced watching the horses run, wild and free.
I'm writing about this because the image and memory of that experience has come to mind the past few days.
Perhaps it's a reminder to hold nature in high regard, to love and protect it, and let it remain wild, natural, and free.
Perhaps it's a remember that we are a part of nature. Let's do something today that nurtures what's expansive, raw, wild, and free in us. It doesn't have to be "wild." Sit on the ground, walk barefoot, let the wind blow through your hair, run if you can, sing out loud, watch birds, listen to squirrels. Maybe be a little wild. Find your own true way to appreciate life in this way.
With awesome joy,
Charlene
