"Important things are things of value and consequence. Unfortunately, they are not the things with which we typically spend the majority of our time and energy. "
~ Suzi Beeby
This quote brings two things to mind.
I have a memory of half listening to my two young daughters chattering enthusiastically about their school day while I stirred something on the stove, removed laundry from the dryer, folded the contents, and continued in my multi-tasking while I listened and responded to them. It wasn't a terrible thing to do. However, I see clearly now that the laundry could have waited. Full attention is so powerful.
Have you ever heard of or seen the rock, pebble, sand demonstration of this principle? You may wish to try it. You start with a large glass jar. Place three large rocks in it. Next, fill the jar with as many pebbles as you can. The jar will seem quite full at that point. But then you start to add sand. And you discover that there is room for lots of sand. When the
jar again seems full, you add water to the jar. Again you realize that there was more room in the jar. Finally, the jar is truly full.
Next, you repeat this filling of a jar with large rocks, pebbles, sand, and water, but reverse how you do it. This time, add water, then sand, then pebbles. You will find that it is not possible to make room for the three large rocks when many little items are already in the jar.
And so it is for the most important things in our lives. Always put them first.
With love and wisdom,
