Roots. What do you think of these? And what do you think of today's quote?
The screw pine is among my favorite trees on Sanibel Island. It has showy above-the-ground roots and yet it's well anchored. I love the bark and twisty branches too. Sometimes I think of it as the "Tree on Stilts" or the "Ready to Run" Tree.
This particular tree leads me to think about my ancestral roots, especially the qualities of my grandparents who emigrated from Eastern Europe. I think of the culture and beliefs they brought with them; their faith in America's promise of freedom and opportunity; their hope for a better life; and their sincere appreciation for goodness. Their values were visible and deep.
I'm on Sanibel Island now, by the way, and I'll be writing Today's Touchstone from here for the next seven days.
I'm eager to share thoughts, feelings, and insights from this beautiful barrier island with you. I hope they will warm your heart and nurture your soul's appreciation for goodness.
Truly,
Charlene
