"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word has been spoken."
~ Fyodor Dostoevsky
It sometimes happens with animals too. Occasionally we encounter a dog and realize we are meeting this dog, not just a dog. Can you hear and feel the difference? It can happen with a cat, a horse, a cow, a bird, any creature, really, as well as with a human being. Our
hearts seem to recognize each other.
In looking through some old photos yesterday, I came upon the one above and felt a rush of love for this key deer that I met on Little Palm Island years ago. Can you see the smile? And those beautiful eyes?
Such reverent encounters with animals can feel more profound and sacred than meeting a human being. Has this ever felt true for
you?
I doubt we can force "I - Thou" holy encounters. But let's try. Today. Let's at least be open to meetings that are reverent, whether they are with people or animals.
Hmm, have you ever felt love and reverence for a particular tree?
While we are reaching for this form of beauty, let's reach out to the family members we may have begun to take for
granted.
Let's appreciate each other,
With gratitude and joy,
Charlene
