I don't know if you've ever noticed this,
but first impressions are often entirely wrong.
- Daniel Handler
My first impression of the beautyberry plant was limited. The plant was not in bloom. The leaves struck me as boring. But as I watched the plant grow through budding, flowering, and fruiting, my impression changed. Plus, I learned that the berries can be made into jams and jellies. The roots and leaves can be made into tea. Every part of the plant is useful, such
as a source of food for many animals and for treating various human ailments.
The beautyberry plant has become a symbol for me, a touchstone reminder that there is always more to a person and in a situation than what we suspect and what we think we know.
Here are a few beautyberry lessons to consider:
Don't judge a book by its cover.
Remember that everyone has hidden talents.
Hurts and fears are often hidden too.
If a friend seems aloof and cold, for example, refrain from taking it personally and reacting.
It's wise to be an actor rather than a reactor, acting with kindness, respect, and compassion toward all, as best we can.
Toward healing with love and beauty,
