"We don't even know how strong we are until we are forced to bring that hidden strength forward. In times of tragedy, of war, of necessity, people do amazing things. The human capacity for survival and renewal is awesome." ~ Isabel Allende
I wish my phone camera was able to capture the size of the uprooted base and the full expanse of this tree on the Bailey Homestead Preserve on Sanibel Island.
Winds from one hurricane pulled the tree's roots from the ground. A second hurricane brought the tree down. But, with a few roots still anchored, the tree survived.
This tree now looks different from most trees. Its trunk is lying on the ground instead of standing tall. As new branches grow and reach toward the sun, they grow in right angles from the prone trunk.
Yes, it looks different, but this tree is alive. In fact, it's thriving and beautiful.
This determined-to-live-tree demonstrates the enormous strength that is part of life. That strength is in you. It's in me. With it we are able to survive life's storms.
And, like this tree, we are changed when we survive and adapt.
When I look back over the storms and adaptations in my life, especially when I faced breast cancer and had a double mastectomy, I feel a kinship with this tree. Like this tree, I look different now.
Every one of us has at least one inspiring story about facing challenges on our journey through life.
I encourage you to remember your stories and to celebrate your gift of strength.
With love,
Charlene
