"The more often we see the things around us - even the beautiful and wonderful things - the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds - even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less." ~ Joseph B. Wirthlin
Usually the summer evening sky we see from the window in our family room looks like the lower half of the sky in this photo. Because it is common, we often don't notice the lovely cloud formations and the subtle transition from setting sun, to sunset, through dusk and the appearance of the first star, into the night sky.
On the other hand, the low, heavy cloud that moved in two night ago commanded our full attention and awe.
Consider for a moment how unusual sights and happenings affect you, especially things like natural disasters, fatal accidents, and other sudden, severe changes.
In such instances, when my mind is stunned and my heart is broken open, I am moved to great depths of appreciation for everything. And I realize how much I have been taking for granted.
Today, let's aim to take nothing and no one for granted.
Intend to see everything as if you are seeing it for the first time. Savor sights, sounds, and scents. Embrace your loved ones. Hug yourself. Smile. Give thanks. Phone at least one person and tell him or her something you appreciate and admire in them. What else might you do?
With love and joy,
Charlene
