"Toleration is the greatest gift of the mind; it requires the same effort of the brain that it takes to balance oneself on a bicycle." ~ Helen Keller
This quote made me stop and think about it yesterday, just as it did the first time I came across it three years or so ago.
Is tolerance a gift in the mind? Or heart? Or soul? Maybe we need to have tolerance known and appreciated in all three. Maybe tolerance needs to be felt and known in our bodies too.
At any rate, I wish tolerance would become as easy as riding a bike. Once you learn you never forget.
Here's a thought: Maybe tolerance is like riding a bike but most of us still have training wheels on our learning of tolerance. Maybe we all need to practice more. Practice. Practice. Practice. And then progress from tolerance to respectful acceptance, to reverence. Wouldn't that be something?
So today, toward Living The Twelve Gifts, let's practice practicing tolerance every chance we get. And have fun doing it!
Joy to you and me,
Charlene
