“Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious."
~ Stephen Hawking
Yes. Let's be curious, amazed, delighted, enthralled, and captivated.
One way to
experience the wonderment aspect of reverence is to savor the natural world with a young child. Is there a child in your life with whom you can "play"?
According to Rachel Carson, "If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”
I wonder if, in order for adults to keep our inborn sense of wonder alive, we need the
companionship of at least one child who can share theirs with us.
A few days ago I again visited The Magic Kingdom with my grandchildren. Along with enjoying the obvious attractions together, such as spinning in the Tea Cups, taking a Jungle Cruise, and riding in a clam shell in Ariel's Under the Sea adventure, we stopped to watch "ordinary" ducks and to examine the broken bits of sea shells that were added to the cement of a walkway. Without them I would not have noticed the
antics of the ducks nor the little shells. Or barnacles that Anthony spotted.
Wishing you child-like wonderment,
Charlene
