TODAY'S TOUCHSTONE

"The responsibility of tolerance lies with those who have the wider vision."

                            ~ George Eliot

The word "vision" feels critically important to me now, in part because of the upcoming Election Day in the U.S.A. And so I'm exploring the word from several angles.

First, I'm wonder about the vision of Victorian-era author George Eliot, whose real name was Mary Ann Evans. Mary Ann used the male pen name "George" because she wanted to ensure that her works would be taken seriously and to protect her somewhat controversial private life.

I don't know the context in which "George" wrote today's quote but for me Mary Ann is saying something like:

"Be tolerant of those who show little tolerance for others, for those who are judging everyone who differs from them in any way. Keep your vision wide. Keep your heart wide open too."

What does today's quote say to you ?

If some people are being hurt and treated unjustly because of the narrow vision of some, what is our responsibility?

With the gift of wisdom, may we receive guidance about our visions today.

With the gift of courage, may we be true to them.

With the gift of reverence, may we be respectful to all.

With loving kindness,

Charlene
