“Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth. So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that were 'reading, writing, arithmetic,
empathy.'"
~ Neil deGrasse Tyson
Our potential to empathize is enormous. We just haven't been trained or encouraged to empathize. In fact, many among us have been taught to refrain from feeling feelings, showing them, sharing them, and caring about the feelings of
others.
Imagine if empathy was highly valued in our families, homes, schools and workplaces. In our country and our culture. In all countries and all cultures. Imagine empathy being taught in our schools. Hopefully, someday soon it will be.
Today, let's stretch and practice empathy beyond our usual level. Let's make extra
effort to watch, listen, and feel with others. Really try to understand how they are feeling and what they are thinking. With no judgings or fixings.
Today, may we deeply feel with at least one other person. Aim to feel for the animals too.
We will all be greatly
enriched.
Truly,
Charlene
