"Why, when we know that there's no such thing as perfect, do most of us spend an incredible amount of time and energy trying to be everything to everyone? Is it that we really admire perfection? No - the truth is that we are actually drawn to people who are real and down-to-earth. We love authenticity and we know that life is messy and imperfect."
~ Brene Brown
Remember the Velveteen
Rabbit story? The wise old Skin Horse knows a lot about imperfection, authenticity and being Real.
"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," (The Rabbit) asked (about becoming Real), "or bit by bit?"
"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time."
Like the Rabbit who longs to be Real, (and like Brene Brown, the author of today's
quote) may we be patient with ourselves and work at becoming fully authentic bit by bit, in every little circumstance, every conversation, every choice.
Becoming Real does take time. It also takes loving ourselves and forgiving ourselves when we wear a mask, when we try to fit
in and please others, when .... oh, there are so many ways we can be untrue and not Real. I have experience with many of them. How about you?
With courage and reverence for our uniqueness, let's aim today to take steps - maybe some baby ones, maybe a big giant one - toward becoming
fully Real.
Reaching in for courage,
Charlene
