TODAY'S TOUCHSTONE

"Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace."

                                        ~ May Sarton

What about things in the course of a day that simple slow us down? Road construction. Traffic jams. Heavy rain. Long checkout lines. Appointment delays in waiting rooms. Being put on hold.

While these things don't connect us with nature as gardening does, can they too be instruments of grace?

I have a friend, Ellen, who consciously uses every such delay as a time not only to practice patience, but a time to relax and breathe with ease. A time to enjoy. An instrument of grace.

It's a choice we can all make. It's not easy, true," says Ellen. "Not at first. But it becomes easier with practice. And more pleasurable too."

Today, may we welcome slowdowns, see them as instruments of grace, and benefit from them.

With gratitude and joy,
Charlene

PS. Here's another quote about change that can help us with this:

"Since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes which see reality." ~Nikos Kazantzakis
