"There are no greater treasures than the highest human
qualities such as compassion, courage, and hope."
- Daisaku Ikeda
Dear Friends,
Than you for taking some time to reflect on this touchstone.
I took this photo several years ago in
Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. It doesn't depict a beautiful scene but I was - I am - deeply moved by the message of the side-by-side monuments.
The headless busts bring attention to what is happening in our chests. The smaller one,
with arms tightly crossed, represents a closed heart. The larger one, with arms outstretched in a plea and a prayer, conveys a heart's yearning.
The sun shining from behind seems to me like an urging to recognize the treasure that we have within us and to feel and care.
With further reflection, I see an urging to uncross our arms and open our hearts; to soften stubbornness; release self-righteousness, and find common ground, which we find when we step up to higher ground, where we stand for principles and stand on them as we go about each day.
Let's live with compassion, courage, and hope.
With love,
Charlene
On
this U.S. Veteran's Day, may honoring those who gave their lives in service stir the noble spirit of service in our souls and inspire us to bring our best selves into our daily living. May our opened hearts and stirred souls help us to recognize the dignity in all people and experience reverence for all creation.
