"The roots of all goodness
lie in the soil of appreciation
for goodness."
-Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama says
something fundamental and profound in this quote. It leads to a vitally-important question: Do we appreciate goodness? Do we value goodness?
I think most people do. But do we value goodness enough that it seeps into our culture?
We could be a stronger, safer, healthier, happier country and world if our wondrous diverse cultures all valued goodness more. If we
valued it more, we'd practice it better. Not perfectly. But better.
I may sound preachy in this touchstone. What I most want to say is that I yearn for more goodness, more kindness, acceptance, love, compassion, and reverence in our culture, country, and
world. Hope and joy would surely come along. Peace, too.
Can one person's heartfelt appreciation for goodness make a difference? Consider these quotes:
" ...Goodness will elicit goodness in the society; other persons will also be good."
- Bhumibol Adulyadej
"Try to see the good in others. When you're tempted to judge someone, make an effort to see their goodness. Your willingness to look for the best in people will subconsciously bring it forth."
- Marianne Williamson
