“People travel to wonder
at the height of the mountains,
at the huge waves of the seas,
at the long course of the rivers,
at the vast compass of the ocean,
at the circular motion of the stars,
and yet they pass by
themselves
without wondering.”
- St. Augustine
Wonderment: It's awesome.
Even though wonderment dims for most of us as we age, we are still awed by nature's grandeur; by things we rarely see, such as a giant harvest moon; and by beauty, especially when it is ephemeral, such as a rainbow.
What about wonderment about ourselves? Other human beings? Humanity?
Imagine if we could be
renewed and deepened in wonderment and awe.
What if, every time we experience awe and wonder, in the midst of the power and pleasure of that, we imagine casting a giant, symbolic net of love and wonder over everyone and everything. Might it have an effect? I wonder.
With love and reverence,
