“When I was a boy and I would see
scary things
in the news, my mother would say to me,
'Look for the helpers.
You will always find people who are helpers.'"
- Fred Rogers
Like Mister Rogers’ mom, let's encourage one another to look for the helpers. Instead of focusing on the scary things, let’s notice the people who jump in to save, soothe, feed, and shelter people in disaster situations, those who rescue animals in harm’s way, those who
work for justice and peace,
people who truly respect life, humanity, and creation–authentic people who walk their talk.
How about if we also say, “Let's be the helpers? Let's be among those who use their talents, gifts, interests, concerns, dreams, ideals to help our human family heal, be safe, and advance.”
It seems so logical and wise that we would do this. Why would we not? We are all capable of being helpers in some way that is very do-able for us.
George Washington said, "Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone."
Every day, millions of people are hurting in some way. At times we are among them.
On this day, let's fill ourselves with love and compassion, send caring throughout
the world, and choose to be of help to someone in some way.
With reverence and beauty,
Charlene
