"We don't even know
how strong we are
until we are forced to bring
that hidden strength
forward."
– Isabel Allende
I'm inspired today by the will to survive and thrive aspect of strength in this blooming hibiscus plant.
Two days ago I spotted it on a clearance rack in the garden center of a hardware store.
The withering plant looked
doomed. But it was not yet dead. So, with faith in its hidden strength, I paid the discounted price, brought the plant home, and gave it a place in my garden, along with water and encouraging words.
In just two days, it appears fully recovered and healthy. It seems happy, too, amidst dune daisies, sunflowers, and other hibiscus.
My neighbor said the blooms are saying "Thank you,"
which led me to think how, at times, we can be like withering plants on a clearance rack.
Sometimes we need just a little empathy and encouragement. And sometimes, like a plant desperately needing water, a basic need must be met before we have enough energy to tap into the depths of the strength within ourselves.
In these stressful times, let's be mindful of the well-being of one another. Whenever we notice a withering, with compassion and wisdom, let's give boosts of strength.
As Amos Bronson Alcott said, "Strengthen me by sympathizing with my strength, not my weakness."
Amen.
With love,
Charlene
