“When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure.” - Peter Marshall
I am wondering what you thought when you read this quote.
I first understood it to mean, like oaks and coal, we are made more durable, more beautiful, and more valuable as a result being under pressure.
Then, with compassion, I realized how every oak experiences storms. Every tree, every plant faces challenges. Every piece of coal does too.
It's not just us.
Every
physical thing experiences difficulties, including threats to its existence. This is the nature of life on Earth.
There are many different possible responses to this. What makes the most sense to me is that we allow it to bring out the best in us.
Let's,
Charlene
PS - Consider a
portion of the classic Desiderata by Max Ehrmann.
"Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with your self. You are a child of the
universe, no less that the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding asit should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."
Amen,
Charlene
