"There is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it."
- Eleanor H. Porter
You're probably familiar with Pollyanna and her "Glad Game," whether or not you read the book by Eleanor H. Porter or saw the movie.
To call someone a Pollyanna is meant to mock a cheerful, positive thinker and dismiss their hopeful perspectives. But consider that the fictional Pollyanna was an eleven-year-old orphaned child with tremendous strength and hope, which helped her to survive hurts and hardships. Her joyful spunk also lifted the spirits of the people in her new town.
Perhaps, instead of making fun of Pollyanna, we should adopt her attitude to help us through these challenging times. Maybe our hopefulness, like Pollyanna's, would become contagious and uplift others, maybe even whole communities.
Yes, I suppose I'm a Pollyanna. But I believe we should give the "Glad Game" a try.
It's simple. Whenever a negative situation comes up, instead of focusing on the loss or the challenge, let's look for something to be glad about.
Seriously, let's choose hope and gratitude.
