"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy,
in whatever situation I may be;
for I have also learned from experience
that the greater part of our happiness or misery
depends upon our dispositions,
and not upon our circumstances.
- Martha Washington
The first First Lady wrote this in a letter to a friend. Despite the death of her first husband, the death of a teenaged child, her second husband engaged in a war, and who knows what other private sufferings, Martha proclaimed a determination to live each day with gratitude and joy.
Whatever this day brings for us, may we choose, like Martha, to live it with good cheer. To do this we can tap into strength or love, hope or joy, wisdom or faith - any one of our gifts, or all of them.
Wishing you the best of life's gifts,
Charlene
